Exploring the World's Museums & Art

For this assignment, you'll be going on a field trip! We're going to explore some of the most important museums in the world and get up close and personal. You'll have the opportunity to learn about art concepts, find where the museums are located, discover the museums' history and create your own art gallery.
First, you'll explore the Artist's toolkit to learn more about important art concepts.
Next, you'll use Google Maps to find the location of the following three museums:
Finally, you'll use the Google Art Project to create a gallery of your favorite paintings from the museums that you visited.

- The Art Institue of Chicago

The Artist's Toolkit
The Artist's Toolkit is an interactive website that illustrates the building blocks, or core concepts, of art. In this section of the assignment, you'll have the opportunity to learn about three key concepts:
Be sure to pay attention to any new vocabulary that is introduced. You will be using these art concepts in your gallery reflections, so be sure to take note of any new terms and their definitions. When you are finished with each activity, please be sure to save your finished work! Please see the screenshot below for instructions.

Google Maps
In this section of the assignment, you'll find the locations of our three museums and learn facts about them. To get started, please visit the Google Maps page. If you a prompted to turn on MapsGL, please do so. This will allow you see buildings in 3D and much more!
In the top left corner, look for the long white rectangle. The first location we are going to search is The Museum of Modern Art, so type this here. You will notice that there are several Museum of Modern Arts, but please select the location on 11 West 53rd Street, New York, New York.

Take a few minutes to explore the photo tour and then read the museum reviews. Based on the reviews, think about what exhibits you are most excited to visit. Before finding the next museum, please select the Save to Map option and create a new map. After creating a new map, find the red edit button and title your map "Museums of the World."
Repeat the above steps for The Art Institute of Chicago and Tate Britain.
Google Art Project
Now that you're familiar with some important art concepts and information about the museums, it's time to visit! To start this section of the assignment, please visit the Google Art Project. Once you're on the page, please click on Collections in the top left corner. In the middle of the page, please turn on Museum View. This will enable you to roam around any museum that you select.
Next, we will visit our first museum, The Art Institute of Chicago. Please find it on the list.
On this page, you'll see a preview of all the art available for view in the museum. By mousing over any art piece, you can find the title, artist and date.
We are going to explore the museum as we would in person, by selecting the orange person symbol in the top left corner of the page.

Zoom in on the painting by scrolling with your mouse. Click on Details in the left corner to learn more about the history of the painting. When you find a painting that you like, please click the small square underneath the lightbulb. This will add the painting to your gallery. Be sure to create a new gallery and called it "Museums of the World." Under description, please include a few sentences as to why you selected the painting and which of the art concepts discussed earlier in the assignment apply.
Please spend 10-15 minutes exploring each museum and add five works of art from each location to your gallery.

Phew! What a field trip! You're now familiar with some important art concepts, know the locations of 3 great art museums and have curated your own personal art collection!

- A link to your personal gallery on Google Art Project. Please make sure that you have made you gallery public.
